Wooden Cactus

These Wooden cactus are so versatile. You can use them as decoration, paper weights, even a door stop! This is a great project for wood scraps you may have laying around your shop.

I am going to show you how I made them and hope you have as much fun with this project as I did.

Step One
Collect some old cans. I used some from dinner the night before.
Remove the original label, wash and dry.
(Careful: make sure you are careful to not cut yourself on the rim of the can)
Step Two
Find the Cactus design you like. You can print them off the computer or free hand them. Remember cactus are not perfect plants, if you want yours to be realistic, I suggest free hand.
I had some leftover wood from another project. This is perfect because the cactus are only going to me about 5" tall. You only need a little piece of wood.
Draw or Trace your cactus and cut them with the Jigsaw.

Step Three
Paint your cactus.
You are open to so much at this point of the project. Go Crazy! What is your Style? You can paint, stain, or burn them. Let your imagination go wild!
I chose a green stain.

Step Four
Time to get some of your aggression out! This was my favorite part of this project.
Take your small nails (I used small black tack nails) and go with it to make your needles for the cactus. I suggest nailing the front of the cactus and then add a few nails to the side to make them 3D.

Step Five
Prepare your Cement or Plaster Mix. This is what gives your cactus weight at the bottom. If you miss this step - Your project will be too top heavy.
Once you mix is prepared you will want to fill the can bout an 1" or 1 1/2" from the top. You want to leave room for your rocks.
Don't let it dry! Go ahead and put your cactus in the can with the mix. This will hold your cactus up. You can lean them or make them stand straight up.

Step Six
The rock decoration is to hide the ugly cement mixture. This is another part you can have options on. Use any rocks you want.  You will layer Hot Glue then add rocks. You will want to continue this layer process until you get to the top of the can.

Step Seven
Apply the Vintage Can Label. You can find so many on Pinterest. I have saved you time and found some for you to print for FREE!
They fit the cans perfectly and was the vintage look I was going for.

Once you have the label. Cut it to size and use the Glue Stick and apply on each end. Wrap it around the can and you are done!

  1. Thanks a lot for providing individuals with a very breathtaking chance to read articles and blog posts from here. It is often very lovely and as well , full of a lot of fun for me personally and my office friends to search your web site nearly three times a week to find out the fresh issues you will have. And indeed, I’m also actually fulfilled with your incredible information served by you. Selected two tips in this article are undoubtedly the most efficient we have ever had.

  2. I not to mention my friends have already been looking at the best items found on your site while suddenly I had a horrible suspicion I never expressed respect to the website owner for those techniques. These ladies appeared to be so stimulated to read all of them and have now pretty much been taking pleasure in them. Thanks for turning out to be simply kind and then for making a choice on some exceptional resources most people are really wanting to understand about. My personal honest regret for not saying thanks to you earlier.
